Product safety recall | Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspot devices

Verizon, the maker of the Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspot devices -- Models MHS900L, MHS900LS and MHS900LPP -- has issued a safety recall of this product, and based on our records, you may have one of the recalled devices through our Remote Sync equipment loaner program.

To ensure continued safe operation of the hotspot please follow these practices:

  • Use only approved charging cables, including the cable provided.

  • When not in use, power down/turn off your device.

  • Place your device on a flat, solid, and sturdy surface such as a floor or table.

  • Ensure your device is not covered for proper ventilation.

  • Keep devices near room temperature when in use.

  • Do not expose the units to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.

  • Do not expose the unit or its battery to water or other liquids.

  • Do not drop the units and do not insert foreign objects into the battery or unit.

In a press release, Verizon shared, during the review and investigation of the listed hotspots the lithium-ion battery can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard. As a safety precaution, the company has pushed out two over-the-air, automatic software updates for devices that are powered on.

To confirm if your device is part of the recall you can compare it visually to the affected models or look for the 15 digit device ID scrolling across the device display.

Next steps

If you no longer need the hotspot please return it as soon as possible. Students should return any hotspots at the end of the Spring Semester. Return instructions can be located on the ASU Libraries website under the how to return laptops / hotspots heading. Hotspots can also be returned in person on the Tempe campus at CRTVC 140, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Once your device has been returned and processed, use this form to submit a new request.
