5 tips to avoid phishing scams at ASU

Cybersecurity is a 24/7 pursuit at ASU as we aim to keep our community protected and informed. Voice or phone phishing is where bad actors may spoof one of our ASU phone numbers in an attempt to voice phish for personal information. We want to take this time to share important guidance to keep yourself protected and report any phishing activities:

5 tips for avoiding and reporting phishing scams

1. Reporting spoofed calls. If a caller claims to be from ASU or another institution you do business with and they ask for personal information such as account and social security numbers, hang up and contact our Experience Center. They can investigate and route your issue to our Information Security team.

2. Do not simply trust caller ID. Phone numbers and caller identities can be faked to appear as if they’re coming from a reputable business. When in doubt, send the caller to voicemail.

3. Never pay for fees, prizes or rewards offered via a phone call from unsolicited callers. The IRS will never ask you for debit or credit card numbers by phone or demand immediate payments using specific methods, such as prepaid gift cards, debit cards, or wire transfers. Instead, they would generally contact you through the United States Postal Service. Do not send money or give out personal information.

4. Add your phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce solicitations and unwanted sales calls.

5. Report phishing If you have a concern over an email or voice scam you received to your ASU credentials, you may also report an incident any time to infosec@asu.edu.
