The UTO Mission
Arizona State University's University Technology Office (UTO) provides the highest quality technology-based services and systems, in a cost-effective manner, to support the University's mission and goals as they apply to student learning, academic research and engagement and public service.
Vision Statement
Evidence suggests that we now have the capacity, experience and technological maturity to finally utilize technology as a force multiplier and as a differentiator. Accordingly, we have adopted the following Vision Statement:
Realize the potential…
of information technology to enable and empower students, faculty and staff
of information technology to transform and benefit ASU processes
of information technology to serve and support the ASU community
of our people to become leaders in their profession
The previous 2010-2014 ASU IT Strategic Plan identified 25 goals across 7 main areas – Student Success, IT Infrastructure, Administrative Effectiveness, IT Security, Academic Technology, Research Computing, and Strategic Alliances – and aligns those goals with related ASU Strategic Priorities. This midterm update indicates adjustments in and revisions to those Goals as some are completed, others demand mid-course corrections and as new Goals emerge. The strategy defined in this update reflects the progress made towards objectives defined in the 2010-2014 IT Strategic Plan, which itself was an update of the 2008-2012 Plan and contains the assessment of the new Chief Information Officer (CIO), Gordon Wishon, who assumed responsibility for the plan in August of 2010.

Reporting Structure
Advisory to the Chief Information Officer.
Responsibilities
The IT Leadership Council will provide insight and expertise on how the use of technology is benefiting the University, and make recommendations to the CIO on where to invest UTO resources toward advances in technology to support the business and acadamic applications for the University. The IT Leadership Council will be an active participant in setting direction with UTO by:
- supporting and communicating technology change and advancements across university departments,
- collaborating on software and hardware licensing models, partnerships with vendors, and other strategic enterprise wide initiatives that benefit ASU,
- providing input into the IT Strategic Plan,
- providing feedback and evaluative data on technologies that are successful, and areas that are challenged and need improvement,
- providing feedback and assessment on overall performance of UTO as an innovative solutions provider and support organization,
- and providing vision and leadership for IT investments, funding strategies, and policy recommendations to University executive management.
Additionally, the Council may be asked to sponsor or champion initiatives as opportunities for growth and change, adopt emerging trends and participate as partners, embracing change and serving as extended members of the UTO unit.
Communication
Meeting agendas and all documents produced for the purpose of the council can be found here.
Members can email each other using the following distribution list: DL.WG.ASU.ITLeadershipCouncil
Questions and suggestions should be emailed directly to Deborah Whitten, UTO Assistant Vice President for IT Planning and Programs, or by calling (480) 727-0050.
Meetings
IT Leadership Council meetings will be held monthly for a minimum of one hour; some meetings may be longer depending on the topics being discussed. An agenda will be sent out to all members prior to each month’s meeting, and topics for next month’s meeting will be solicited from the group at the end of each meeting. Minutes from the previous meeting will be approved at the beginning of each meeting.
Membership
Members of the IT Leadership Council are selected based on the knowledge, skill, and expertise they bring to the group, and not all ASU business areas will be represented. It is a goal to keep membership limited to 15 or less in order to provide optimal time and opportunity for full engagement of the group. Members are expected to attend meetings and participate in lively discussion, exploration, and debate.
Membership tenure will be a 2-3 year appointment, with members rotating off at 12-month increments to keep the membership full and consistent. (First year of the committee will need to make some decisions about how to manage rotation without affecting content and momentum).
The IT Leadership Council governance consists of a Chairperson (Gordon Wishon), an elected Co-chair, and a Secretary.
A process for discontinuing membership is forthcoming.
